RECREATE at WME2025: Boosting knowledge exchange on Alternative Water Resources

Last week, RECREATE took part in Water Market Europe (WME) 2025 in Girona, contributing to Session 5: Splashdown – Transferring Knowledge and Building Synergies with Other NbS-related Projects. Co-organised by Water Europe and supported by the MULTISOURCE project, WME2025 brought together key players shaping the future of sustainable water management across Europe.

In the session, our technical coordinator, Queralt Plana Puig (Eurecat), presented how RECREATE is working to unlock the full potential of Alternative Water Resources (AWR) for smarter, more resilient water systems. RECREATE's approach was showcased, which integrates AWR technologies – including rainwater harvesting, wastewater reclamation, desalination and aquifer recharge – with digital tools to co-design climate adaptation pathways for water-stressed regions. Queralt also emphasised the importance of AWR increasing water resilience in the region of Costa Brava, located close to Girona, which is one of the four case studies in the project.

Moderated by ICLEI Europe, the session provided a vibrant platform for RECREATE to connect with projects such as BIODAPH20, WATERSOURCE, NINFA, Urban GreenUp, MARCLAIMED and CARDIMED. Together, the projects explored practical solutions for advancing water management, shared strategies for upscaling innovations and discussed challenges related to decision-making tools.

By participating in WME2025, RECREATE strengthened its ties with the European water innovation community, reaffirming its commitment to improving water resilience through technical innovation, stakeholder engagement and collaboration.
